Films are irresistable

Finished watching some lovely movies: Breakfast at Tiffany's, An Education, The Blind Side, Up in the Air, Coco before Chanel and The Vertical Ray of the Sun. Three of them are nominated for Best Picture this year.

I personally like "An Education" much indeed because in one way or another, I find myself in there. The film sets in London in the 1960s, which makes it perfect for me (music, fashion and all that jazz). The Blind Side made me weep like a child missing her own Mom - such an amazing real story and Sandra Bullock was stunning as a mother. I won't mind if she takes home an Oscar for best leading actress this year (well honestly I will be so sad for Meryl if that really happens).

It's funny how I realised "The scent of Green Papaya" was also an Oscar nominee in 1994, along with all the marvellous hits like Pulp Fiction or Forrest Gump. Of course it was in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category but that still counts, doesn't it :D . So I tried to search for it everywhere on the Internet but all the download links were dead. Then I happened to watch another film directed by Trần Anh Hùng - The Vertical Ray of Sun. Thank God somebody uploaded the whole film on YouTube! This is the last work of Trần Anh Hùng's "Vietnam Trilogy", all starred his wife - Trần Nữ Yên Khê. I watched this film ages ago, maybe when I was still in Primary school or early Secondary school. Have to say the feeling is completely different now. I love this kind of film, in which I don't have to expect an interesting plot, it's rather about mood and emotions. Three women characters are all exceptionally gorgeous. Very restrained acting and little dialogue. Everything just flows and overflows. This is definitely one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. For somebody else, "The vertical ray of the sun" romanticises Hanoi a little bit too much. But for me, all those dreamy artful images are so dear to the heart. Hanoi is really THAT irresistable.

And yes, I need moments when I can dream fashion and worship women's beauty. An Audrey Hepburn film is always the best treat. But the dangerous thing is, watching "Breakfast at Tiffany's" only makes me desire a piece of Tiffany even more. I promise this, as soon as I can afford to buy expensive jewelry for myself, I'll buy Mom Tiffany because she loves it. She deserves the best!

(Save "the Good, the Bad & the Ugly for someday when I really have time! Can't wait to get my dissertation done done done)
